Chargers and Rams G.M.'s Have Ruining Teams In Common
San Diego Chargers General Manager/Executive Vice-President A.J. Smith and St. Louis Rams General Manager/President Of Football Operations Jay Zygmunt should co-author a book entitled, "How My Ego Destroyed A Football Team." It's sure to be a best-seller in San Diego and St. Louis.
Because Smith refused to get along with Marty Schottenheimer, and Zygmunt did the same with Mike Martz, they were fired in successive seasons, despite their respective success.
Make no mistake about it - petty bickering and office feuds are what got both Schottenheimer and Martz fired, because it surely wasn't about the product on the field.
Martz owns the third most victories (56) and the third highest winning percentage (.609) in the history of the Rams franchise, which includes their time in Cleveland and Los Angeles.
Schottenheimer had 47 wins in his tenure with the Chargers, compiling a .588 winning percentage. Those 47 wins are just a fraction of the 205 he has collected, which puts him at sixth all-time in head coaching victories.
Did both Martz and Schottenheimer have their flaws? Of course they did, and they are well-known. But neither deserved their fate at the time it happened.
San Diego went from a 14-2 team last season under Schottenheimer to a 1-3 team this season under Norv Turner. Meanwhile, the Rams were lucky to get to 8-8 under Scott Linehan last year, but are regressing this season, and they are arguably the worst team in football with an 0-4 record.
Both Turner and Linehan are comically inept - Norv Turner possesses a .408 winning percentage, and Linehan's stands at .400, though it's certain to get worse as this dreadful season goes forth.
I've already ranted about Linehan's failings, and Turner's are just the same. Both men look completely lost - like they have no idea what the hell is going on or how to do anything about it. They are both fine offensive coordinators - but horrendous head coaches.
Unfortunately, thanks to A.J. Smith and Jay Zygmunt, fans in San Diego and St. Louis are stuck with these gentlemen for at least another season after this one. NFL coaches are almost always given three years, even if it's painfully obvious they are ill-equipped to handle it.
Until then, the only thing we have to look forward to is the day that the inevitable press conference comes declaring these two clowns have been replaced.

Dave Wannstedt even thinks Norv Turner sucks.
Ouch...well played. And true.
